Cercedilla Field Notes: Fall Flowers at Ermita de San Antonio

Not so sure the fall edition of this field notes will have as many flowers to reference as the spring edition, but read on to see if I discover more than one!

  • Colchicum montanum

    • EN: mountain meadow saffron or mountain autumn crocus
    • ES: quitameriendas, merendera
    • Notes: Blooms in late summer through autumn (September–October), just as most other flowers are fading. It often appears among dry grasses under pines (Pinus sylvestris) or in meadows near granite outcrops — a sure sign that autumn has arrived in the Sierra de Guadarrama.
